Pelvic Floor Dysfunction & Pelvic Pain

Pelvic floor problems are far more common than most people realise, and far more treatable than many people are told. Leaking when you run, jump, sneeze, or laugh. A persistent feeling of heaviness or pressure. Pain with sitting, intimacy, or everyday activities. Urgency that dictates where you go and what you do. These symptoms can quietly but significantly affect your confidence, your activity levels, and your quality of life, and yet so many people carry them for years assuming they are simply something to put up with.

They are not. And you do not have to.

At Prime Sports Physiotherapy in Edinburgh, we provide confidential, specialist women’s health physiotherapy for pelvic floor dysfunction and pelvic pain, delivered with the expertise, sensitivity, and openness that makes all the difference when it comes to symptoms this personal.

Our women’s health physiotherapist Nikki is the lead women’s health physiotherapist at a local acute NHS hospital and a recognised specialist in her field. She brings advanced clinical knowledge across pelvic health, pregnancy and postnatal rehabilitation, pelvic girdle pain, and pain science, alongside a warmth and openness that allows you to discuss even the most sensitive symptoms with complete ease. There is no embarrassment here, just expert, compassionate care from someone who genuinely understands.

Most people come to us looking for the same things: to feel dry and comfortable again, to move without pain, to regain confidence in their body, and to get back to daily life without their pelvic floor dictating what they can and cannot do. That is where we start. For those who want to return to running, sport, or high-impact exercise, we build that into the programme too, but restoring comfort, continence, and function always comes first.

We regularly assess and treat stress and urge incontinence, urgency and frequency, prolapse symptoms and pelvic heaviness, postnatal recovery including diastasis recti and caesarean scar care, new Mum MOT, pelvic girdle pain, menopause-related pelvic changes, vulvodynia, vaginismus and dyspareunia, pelvic pain affecting sitting, intimacy, or daily activities, and leakage during impact exercise such as running and jumping.

Your appointment begins with a thorough and unhurried consultation covering your symptoms, bladder and bowel habits, activity levels, pain, and goals. You are always in control of your assessment. With your consent, an internal pelvic floor examination may be offered as it provides the most accurate picture of pelvic floor function, but external assessment covering breath mechanics, abdominal wall function, hip strength, posture, and movement is equally valuable and always available as an alternative. You are welcome to bring a chaperone to any appointment.

Treatment is personalised to you and may include education and self-management strategies, manual therapy and scar work, pelvic floor coordination and strengthening, breath mechanics and core rehabilitation, bladder retraining strategies, and a graded return to running, lifting, or impact exercise where relevant. You will leave each session with clear exercises and a step-by-step plan, reviewed and progressed regularly as you improve.

This service is for any woman experiencing pelvic floor symptoms or pelvic pain, at any age and at any stage of life. You do not need a referral to book. If something does not feel right, we are here to help you recover, perform, and thrive.
