Acupuncture & Dry Needling

At Prime Sports Physiotherapy, acupuncture and dry needling are used alongside physiotherapy treatment to help reduce pain, relieve muscle tension, and support recovery from injury. These techniques are delivered by physiotherapists who have completed additional post-graduate training and are used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your individual needs.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine sterile needles into specific points on the body. It is commonly used within physiotherapy to help manage pain, improve movement, reduce muscle tension, and promote relaxation. Dry needling is a related technique that targets trigger points within muscles and soft tissues, helping to reduce muscle tightness, improve function, and alleviate pain.

Your appointment will begin with a thorough assessment by one of our AACP qualified physiotherapists. We will discuss your symptoms, medical history, goals, and any previous treatment you may have received. Following the assessment, your physiotherapist will explain their findings and discuss whether acupuncture or dry needling is likely to be beneficial as part of your treatment plan.

If appropriate, treatment may begin during the same appointment. Most patients describe the sensation of acupuncture as mild and comfortable, although some people may experience a slight ache, tingling sensation, or muscle twitch when a needle is inserted. Treatment is always tailored to your comfort levels, and your physiotherapist will explain the process fully before commencing.

Supporting Your Long-Term Recovery

At Prime Sports Physiotherapy, we believe that long-term results come from addressing the underlying cause of your symptoms rather than simply treating pain. For this reason, acupuncture and dry needling are often combined with hands-on physiotherapy, exercise rehabilitation, movement retraining, strength and conditioning advice, and education to help you achieve the best possible outcome.

The number of treatments required will vary depending on your condition, symptoms, and goals. Many people benefit from a course of treatment as part of a wider rehabilitation programme. Your physiotherapist will discuss realistic expectations, likely recovery timescales, and any recommended follow-up appointments during your consultation.

Acupuncture is currently available at our Balerno clinic, with services also becoming available at our Newhaven clinic from Autumn 2026.
