Orthopaedic Surgery Rehabilitation
Orthopaedic surgery is a significant undertaking, and for many people it represents a rehabilitation turning point, the moment they finally address a problem that has been limiting their life. But surgery is only part of the journey. How well and how quickly you recover depends enormously on the quality of your rehabilitation, both before the procedure and in the weeks and months that follow. At Prime Sports Physiotherapy in Edinburgh, we specialise in pre and post-operative physiotherapy, guiding you through every stage of your surgical journey to help you achieve the best possible outcome.
We also understand that for many people, orthopaedic surgery does not arrive on its own terms. It often follows an injury, sometimes sudden and traumatic, that has brought its own shock, pain, and upheaval before the surgical journey has even begun. The emotional and practical impact of that, on top of the demands of recovery, can be significant. We take the time to listen, to acknowledge the full picture of what you are going through, and to support you as a person as well as a patient, because we know that recovery is about far more than what happens in the clinic.
But recovery is also a story with a positive ending. We have supported many patients to go from surgery to the sports pitch, from the operating table to the golf course, from barely being able to walk to completing their first post-operative 5k. Whatever your goal, however big or small it might feel right now, we will be with you every step of the way, celebrating your progress, pushing you forward when you are ready, and making sure that when you do return to the life and activities you love, you do so with the strength, confidence, and resilience to truly thrive.
The window around surgery is not passive. It is where outcomes are made or lost, and having expert support on both sides of the operating table makes a real difference.
Why does pre and post-operative physiotherapy matter?
What surgeries do we support?
We provide pre and post-operative physiotherapy for a wide range of orthopaedic procedures including knee replacement, ACL reconstruction, meniscal surgery, hip replacement and resurfacing, hip labral repairs, rotator cuff repair, shoulder stabilisation and reconstruction, ankle ligament repair, Achilles surgery, ligament and tendon repairs, and spinal procedures including discectomy and spinal fusion.
What does an appointment involve?
Before surgery your physiotherapist will complete a detailed assessment, discuss your procedure and goals, and create a tailored prehabilitation programme designed to prepare your body as effectively as possible. After surgery treatment draws on hands-on therapy to manage pain, reduce stiffness, and work with scar tissue to restore suppleness and reduce tightness, alongside progressive rehabilitation exercises that rebuild strength, restore movement, and improve balance and functional confidence. Load management ensures healing tissue is protected at every stage, and performance testing is available to provide objective evidence of your readiness to return to full activity. For those returning to sport, we build structured return to sport programmes into every rehabilitation plan, ensuring you go back to training and competition with the strength, confidence, and objective evidence to know you are truly ready.
Who is it for?
Our orthopaedic rehabilitation service is suitable for anyone preparing for or recovering from orthopaedic surgery, regardless of age or activity level. You do not need a referral to book. If surgery is on the horizon, or already behind you, we are here to help you recover, perform, and thrive.
